How to know if a prospect actually read your sales deck

Last updated · Pitchline

Short answer

You can't tell from an email attachment. To know whether a prospect read your deck, send it as a tracked link instead of a file. Document trackers such as DocSend, Papermark or HubSpot Documents show opens and time per page. A Voice PDF from Pitchline shows the same, and also records the questions the prospect asked while the AI agent presented the deck.

Option 1: Email attachment (no visibility)

A PDF attached to an email tells you nothing. Open tracking might show the email was opened, but Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates those numbers, so even that signal is unreliable. You won't know whether the attachment was opened at all.

Option 2: Shared cloud file (minimal visibility)

Google Drive and OneDrive can show that a file was viewed, mostly by people signed in to accounts you can see. You won't get time per page, and anonymous views from outside your organisation are often invisible.

Option 3: Document tracking link (good visibility)

Tools like DocSend, Papermark and HubSpot Documents turn a PDF into a link that logs each visit: who opened it, when, how long they spent on each page, and whether it was forwarded. You learn what the prospect looked at. You don't learn what they thought or what confused them.

Option 4: Voice PDF (visibility plus the prospect's questions)

A Voice PDF tracks the same things as a document link and adds an AI voice agent that presents the deck and takes questions. Because the prospect talks to the agent, you also get:

  • every question they asked
  • their answers to qualifying questions about budget, timeline and current process
  • which slides they went back to
  • a separate session for each person the deck gets forwarded to

That's the difference between "they spent 1m 42s on pricing" and "they spent 1m 42s on pricing and asked whether annual billing gets a discount."

FAQ

Questions

Is DocSend enough to know if a prospect read my deck?

For knowing whether a deck was opened and how long each page was viewed, yes. If you also want the deck explained to the reader and want to see their questions, you need a format that presents the deck, such as a Pitchline Voice PDF.

Does tracking a sales deck feel creepy to buyers?

Page-view tracking on shared documents is standard in B2B sales and most buyers expect it. Avoid quoting the data back to them, such as mentioning minutes spent on a slide. Use it to decide what to talk about.

Can I track a sales deck for free?

Yes. Papermark has a free tier for document tracking, and Pitchline's free plan includes 5 Voice PDF sessions with full analytics and every question the prospect asked.
